Artist's Description
Cybernetic hand prosthesis. Artwork showing the internal mechanisms of a prosthetic hand designed to be controlled by neural input from the amputee's wrist stump. The robotic mechanical parts are at right. The interface between this and the human, neural part is implanted in the wrist stump (lower left). The inset (upper left) shows the interface and connecting element between the electro-mechanical system and the nerve endings in the wrist stump. The implant in the wrist stump communicates wirelessly with the prosthetic hand. This merging of human and machine is known as cybernetics or bionics.
