Granite invading psammite. Cut rock surface show- ing granite (lower left) intruding into psammite. This rock mixture was formed by molten magma" rising from great depths and forcing its way into sedimentary beds of sandstone. The magma cooled and solidified into the igneous rock granite. Heat and pressure from the magma transformed the sand- stone into psammite, a type of metamorphic rock. The sandstone's original structure has been de- formed, producing the distinct wavy bands seen here. Igneous rocks are rocks that were once molten. Magnification x0.25 at 35mm size."
