Artist's Description
Cumulonimbus with anvil. Billowing bank of clouds seen approaching a lake. The towering heads or anvils" of cumulonimbus clouds are seen, with elongated tops. Cumulonimbus clouds are powered by violent updraughts and reach over 10,000 metres in altitude. When the upward-moving column of air reaches a high layer of moving air, the top of the cloud is drawn into the horizontal "anvil" shape. Cumulonimbus clouds are associated with hail, heavy rain and thunderstorms."
