Artist's Description
Pneumonia bacteria (Klebsiella pneumoniae) colonies (pink) being cultured on an agar growth medium (red) in a petri dish. K. pneumoniae is one of several bacteria that can cause pneumonia (lung inflammation). It causes a severe form that can be a complication of chronic lung diseases, leading to blood-stained sputum, breathing difficulties and sometimes death. Antibiotic treatments are available. Grown on MacConkey agar, a differential agar that is used to identify bacteria by the red colour produced as a pH response to the acid formed by lactose-fermenting bacteria.
