Artist's Description
Cuban Missile Crisis site being dismantled. Aerial reconnaissance photos of Mariel Naval port, Cuba, showing Soviet ships loading missiles and support equipment for removal from Cuba. Here the ships Metallurg Anosov (centre) and Divnogorsk (lower right) can be seen. The amassing of nuclear missiles in Cuba by Soviet forces in 1962 precipitated the Cuban Missile Crisis. These medium range ballistic missiles (MRBMs) would have been able to reach the USA from Cuba. This led US President John F. Kennedy to order a naval blockade of Cuba. The following stand-off brought the world to the brink of nuclear warfare. The crisis ended on 28th October 1962, when Soviet Premier Khrushchev announced that the Cuban sites would be dismantled. Photographed on 5th November 1962.
