Description
Crossley Estate. The main house of the Crossley Estate in Halifax, Yorkshire, England. In the late 19th century, the estate was owned by the British businessman and amateur astronomer Edward Crossley (1841-1905). Crossley built a private observatory on this estate, using the 36-inch telescope that he purchased from Andrew Ainslie Common in 1885. The weather conditions in Halifax proved unsuitable for astronomical observations, and in 1895 Crossley donated the telescope to the Lick Observatory in California, USA, where it is still in use over 100 years later.
