Description
Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary, Raton, New Mexico: white line level with the hammer is the iridium- rich boundary clay. Below the line the rocks are Cretaceous, above, Tertiary. Iridium is not normally found in the earth but is more commonly associated with meteorites. High concentration here is associated with a meteorite impact 65 million years ago that wiped out the dinosaurs among other species.
