Crane fly head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a crane fly (Tipula sp.), showing its large compound eyes (blue), antennae and mouthparts (centre-left). Crane flies, also known as 'daddy-long-legs', are primitive insects with a single pair of wings. They have long slender, fragile legs that are easily discarded if they become trapped. Magnification: x30, when printed 10 cm wide.
