Artist's Description

Crane-fly. High-speed photograph of a crane-fly (Tipula sp.) in flight. Popularly known as the daddy-long-legs, the crane-fly is a primitive insect which possesses a single pair of wings. Should one of the legs be caught it can be easily discarded, allowing the fly to escape otherwise unharmed. There are over 300 crane-fly species in Britain, with wingspans ranging in size from 15mm to 65mm.
