Description
Supercomputer. Cosmologist using the Cosmology Machine, a massive supercomputer at the University of Durham, UK. Scientists are using it to model the evolution of the Universe, from the Big Bang to the present day. The computer is built of 152 processors and can perform over 456 billion calculations per second, enabling scientists to compare highly complex simulated universes with astronomical observations. Its first simulation was begun on July 31, 2001. A 3-dimensional model of local galaxies is seen on the monitor at lower right. Photographed in the Physics Department, University of Durham.
