Corona during solar eclipse. 18th century diagram showing the Sun's corona (large circle), as viewed during the total solar eclipse of 24th June 1778, surrounded by stars (small dots labelled 'c'). The corona is a type of plasma 'atmosphere' of the Sun. It extends millions of kilometres into space but is most easily seen during a total solar eclipse, when the moon (smaller dark circle, centre) blocks out the light from the sun itself. This diagram was published in 1779 by Antonio de Ulloa (1716-1795) a Spanish general, explorer, author and astronomer.
