Description
Corona caused by birch pollen. Image of the optical atmospheric effect known as a corona around the solar disc. It consists of one or more coloured rings located symmetrically around the Sun, caused by the diffraction of light by particles in the air. In this case the sky is clear and the corona is elliptical rather than circular. It is thought that this is because the diffraction is caused by non-spherical pollen grains in the air rather than spherical water droplets, which tend to produce a circular corona. The same phenomenon may be seen around the lunar disc. This photograph was taken in Finland on a day when the birch pollen count was very high.
