Description
Congenital syphilis. Historical medical illustration showing congenital syphilis lesions in two babies. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It is passed from an infected mother to the foetus during pregnancy, and can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, deformities, or death of the infant. Some babies with congenital syphilis may have symptoms such as snuffles , rash, and blisters at birth, while others develop symptoms later. From Atlas of Venereal and Skin Diseases by Prince Albert Morrow, published in 1889.
