Description
Common pipistrelle bat (Pipistrellus pipistrellus) wing, backlit to show its structure. The bat's wings is a modified forearm, with a membrane between the bones that is an extension of the skin. The elbow joint can be seen at left. At top centre is the wrist joint, which has a thumb (top) and four fingers coming off of it. The membrane contains blood vessels (light lines) and muscles. This specimen was collected in Derbyshire, UK.
