Comets. 15th-century manuscript page showing the appearance of comets observed in the night skies by medieval astronomers. This publication dates from shortly after 1464. The page consists of watercolour-and-ink on paper. The manuscript is by a German author. Comets are icy bodies from the outer solar system that boil and form a bright tail of gas and dust as they approach the Sun. In medieval times, they were often seen as evil omens, foretelling doom.
