Comet nucleus. Optical image of the core of comet Borrelly. The nucleus is composed of rock and ice and is about 8 kilometres long. The surface has smooth plains (light) and rougher, ridged and faulted terrain (dark). Photographed during a flyby by NASA's Deep Space 1 probe in September 2001.
