Artist's Description
Comet ISON, SOHO image. Timelapse image of comet ISON (C/2012 S1) in November and December 2013. This sungrazing comet, also known as Comet Nevskiā??Novichonok, is approaching at lower right of the Sun. It disintegrated as it reached perihelion (closest approach to the Sun) on 28 November 2013. The remains are shown receding from the Sun at top (final image on 1 December 2013). This image is a composite, with the Sun (centre) imaged by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), with two coronagraphs (red and blue) showing the solar atmosphere (corona) as imaged by ESA/NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO).
