Description
Flu virus. Coloured transmission electron micro- graph (TEM) of the virus that causes influenza in humans. This virus belongs to the orthomyxovirus class of RNA viruses, all of which possess an affinity for mucus. The viruses are surrounded by a protein envelope and covered with specialised molecules called glycoproteins (seen here in red). These are used as a means of attachment to the mucoprotein receptors on the surface of host cells of the respiratory epithelium. Influenza is usually short-lived and is seldom serious. Magnification x250,000 at 35mm size.
