Description
Herpesvirus. Coloured transmission electron micro- graph (TEM) of a single herpesvirus particle. At centre is the virus with a dotted surface composed of protein units called capsomeres. Within this shell is viral DNA. The virus is surrounded by an envelope with a fringe of surface spikes. Herpes viruses include a number of types that cause infection in humans: herpes simplex types 1 & 2 (oral and genital lesions), Epstein-Barr virus (glandular fever), herpes zoster (chickenpox) and cytomegalovirus (various infections). Examined under the electron microscope, there are no obvious differences in appearance of these various types. Magnification: x210,000 at 6x6cm size. x150,000 at 6x7cm size.
