Macrophage. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a macrophage. Macrophages form part of the reticulo-endothelial system, also known as mononuclear phagocyte system, which includes cells and tissues with marked phagocytic properties. Macrophages are capable of engulfing and digesting cellular debris, aged red cells, and once activated by antigenic stimuli, bacteria and foreign bodies. Their shape is characterised by thin projections (filopodia) which are used by the macrophages for support and movement. Magnification: x6,500 at 6x7cm size.
