Description
Hurricane Andrew. Coloured satellite image of Hurricane Andrew. North is at top. The hurricane is the spiral of clouds (coloured red) around the central, calm, clear eye. Areas of sea are light/dark blue and land is purple. This image was made when the storm was in the Gulf of Mexico after passing over Florida (centre right), USA. Winds in the storm reached sustained speeds of 230 kilometres per hour and caused over $20 billion of damage. The storm then travelled north to Louisiana before dispersing. The data for this image was obtained by the GOES-7 on 25 August 1992.
