Description
Witch doctor cave painting. Coloured replica of a 20,000-year-old cave painting of a barefooted witch doctor or sorcerer dressed in a deerskin costume. This painting was made by Cro-Magnon humans, the ancestors of modern humans. Cro-Magnon Man spread into Europe 40,000 years ago, apparently driving the rival Neanderthal Man to extinction. Ancient witch doctors often dressed fantastically, clothing themselves in deer or bear skins, antlers or claws. This and their dance-like posture may have gained the undivided attention of patients while performing a healing ritual. This cave painting was found in the Grotto of Les Trois Freres in Ariege in the French Pyrenees.
