Description
Spinal nerves. Computer-enhanced historical illustration of the human spinal cord and spinal nerves. Orange & blue blood vessels & orange muscles of the back & the upper arms can be seen. The spinal cord is a mass of green nerve fibres running from top to bottom of image. The spinal cord and brain make up the central nervous system (CNS). A set of 31 spinal nerves are seen emerging in two rows at either side of the spinal cord. The lowest 9 nerves supply the legs and form a spray known as the cauda equina. Spinal nerves carry motor and sensory information between the body and CNS. Illustration by the celebrated Italian anatomist Paolo Mascagni (1755-1815).
