Description
Nucleus and endoplasmic reticulum. Coloured high resolution scanning electron micrograph of the nucleus and rough endoplasmic reticulum of a primordial testis germ cell (8-week-old human embryo). The nucleus contains the chromatin fibres (pink). Dispersed amongst the chromatin are the chromosomes which hold the genetic instructions. These are only visible when the cell is dividing. Surrounding the nucleus (thin, yellow) is the nuclear membrane. Originating from the membrane is rough endoplasmic reticulum (top centre). This stack of membranes carrying ribosomes (small dots) is associated with protein synthesis.
