Artist's Description
Collision in CL0958+4702 galaxy cluster, combined infrared and visible light image. Many galaxies are seen in this image, but the central blob consists of four large galaxies that are merging in one of the biggest galactic collisions ever seen. The cloud around the galaxies consists of billions of stars being ejected during the collision. Infrared data is red, and visible light is green. The overlapping areas are orange/yellow. The infrared data was obtained by the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST). The visible light was imaged by the ground-based WIYN telescope. CL0958+4702 is some 5 billion light years from Earth, in the constellation Ursa Major.
