Artist's Description
Collecting eggs from Nile crocodiles. Researchers fending off aggressive female Nile crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus) while collecting eggs from their nests. This carnivorous predator inhabits tropical and subtropical areas of Africa, near swamps, lakes and rivers. The females lay 25 to 80 eggs in a sandy area, then guard them during a 3-month incubation period. These nests are at the Pierrelatte crocodile farm (La Ferme aux Crocodiles) in southern France. Founded in 1994, this tourist attraction, research centre, and tropical greenhouse, includes over 400 crocodiles in enclosed lake areas. Photographed in 2011.
