Description
19th century coal mining. Engraving of a scene within a coal mine in 1850, in Newcastle-upon- Tyne, England. The mined coal is being transported by truck from the coalface towards a lift shaft where it will be lifted to the surface. One of the miners (at lower right) is lighting a pipe. Smoking in coal mines was extremely hazardous in the nineteenth century. The large amounts of methane and coal dust in the air were highly explosive. In modern mines smoking is forbidden and fans circulate fresh air all the time. Modern mines are also sprayed with limestone dust to reduce coal dust.
