Cities of Babylon and Nineveh. 17th-century depiction of the geography and location of the ancient cities of Babylon (lower centre) and Nineveh (upper centre). The Tower of Babel is at lower right. The rivers Euphrates (left) and Tigris (right) are shown flowing through Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq). Other cities are also labelled in Latin, including Seleucia (centre right). At top is a settlement labelled 'Ur Chaldeor' (Ur of the Chaldees). Babylon, located on the Euphrates river, was capital of the Babylonian empire of the 2nd and 1st millennia BC. Nineveh, on the Tigris river, was the capital of the Assyrian Empire at its height (around 705-612 BC). Seleucia was founded in around 305 BC as the first capital of the Seleucid Empire. This page is from 'Turris Babel' (1679) by German Jesuit scholar Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680).
