Description
Chromosome and microtubules. Illustration of the microtubules (green) used to separate a chromosome (blue) into chromatids during mitotic cell division (mitosis). This is the metaphase stage, where the chromosome, consisting of two identical chromatids, has lined up in the centre of the dividing cell. The microtubules attach to the central region of the chromosomes (the centromere) in an area known as the kinetochore (yellow). In the next stage of cell division (anaphase), the chromatids separate and move apart as the microtubules shorten, pulling the chromatids towards the mitotic spindle poles.
