Description
Christmas rose. Historical artwork of a Christmas rose (Helleborus niger). Also known as the black hellebore, its poisonous underground stems, or rhizomes, are used in a dried form in alternative medicine for their purgative properties. It is a low-growing plant and is found throughout central and southern Europe and far western Asia. From a German encyclopaedia known as the Bilder-Atlas, published in 1860.
