Description
Christmas Island seen from space. North is oriented toward the top left corner. The pale blue area at the bottom edge of the island is a shallow lagoon, almost completely cut off from the open ocean. The prevailing easterly wind has drawn two lines of clouds from the island. Christmas Island (or Kiritimati) is volcanic in origin, but is now covered with coral limestone. It is part of the Line Islands chain in the Pacific Ocean, just north of the equator at 157 West longitude. With a diameter of about 25km, it is considered to be the largest atoll in the World. This photograph was taken by the crew of Shuttle Columbia during Mission STS-32 of 9-20 January 1990.
