Description
NOMAD and CHORUS neutrino detectors. View of the NOMAD (left) and CHORUS (right) neutrino detectors at CERN, the European particle physics lab near Geneva. Both experiments are designed to look for tau neutrinos. Neutrinos exist in three types (electron, muon and tau neutrinos). If neutrino masses are non-zero and different from each other, they will 'oscillate' between one type and another. By looking at a pure beam of muon neutrinos, NOMAD and CHORUS will try to detect whether tau neutrinos arise by this process. Tau neutrinos may be detected by their characteristic decays into other particles.
