Description
This type of percussion drilling rig was widely used throughout remote Chinese provinces to construct deep wells, mainly to obtain the supplies of brine from which to extract salt. Assisted by the springboard and manpower alone, the well was deepened by repeatedly impacting a heavy drill bit.Wells could be up to 1000 meters in depth and about 15cm in diameter. At a drilling rate of less than 50cm per 24 hours they could take up to three years to build. Today's cable tool percussion drilling rig is directly descended from the bamboo framework of the Chinese system.
