Description
Chemical properties. 17th-century list of chemicals and elements with Latin names and density values relative to gold (aurum, 100). The other chemicals, elements and substances are: mercury (mercuris), lead (plumbum), silver (argentum), copper ore (cuivre), brass or bronze ore (airain), iron (ferrum), tin (stannum), loadstone (magnes), marble (marmor), stone (lapis), crystals (cristallus), water (aqua), wine (vinum), wax (cera), and oil (oleum). This list is from 'Cogitata physico-mathematica' (1644), a book on chemistry and mathematical physics by French theologian, mathematician and music theorist Marin Mersenne (1588-1648).
