Artist's Description

Chalk cliffs formed by coastal erosion. Chalk is a rock that is composed of the fossilised remains of the skeletons of microscopic marine animals, and so consists largely of calcium carbonate. The beds of chalk will have originated under a prehistoric ocean. Changes in sea level and slow movements in the Earth's crust raised the chalk, exposing it to wave action erosion by the sea. Photographed near Lulworth Cove, Dorset, UK.
