Artist's Description

CERN site. Aerial photograph of the countryside just outside of Geneva, Switzerland. Beneath the fields lays a 27 kilometre circumference tunnel that housed the large electron positron (LEP) accelerator. The LEP, which was operational between 1989 and 2000, accelerated electrons and positrons in the opposite direction and then focused them so that they collided. In 2000 the LEP was dismantled to make way for the large hadron collider (LHC) particle accelerator. A pilot run of the LHC is scheduled for summer 2007. The runways of Geneva airport are at upper centre, with Lake Geneva to their left.
