Description
Cerebral cortex tissue. Confocal light micrograph of a section through the cerebral cortex of the brain. Pyramidal neurons (nerve cells) are red, glial cells, a type of support cell, are green, and cell nuclei are blue. Pyramidal cells consist of a triangular cell body with numerous processes (dendrites), which collect information from other cells, and an axon, which passes information to other cells. Glial cells provide the neurons with structural support, and nutrients and oxygen. The cerebral cortex, also known as the grey matter, is the outer layer of the cerebral hemispheres. It is responsible for the higher brain functions, such as memory, language and consciousness, and for processing sensory input.
