Artist's Description
Cellular model of nutrient absorption. The wells in the trays contain Caco-2 cells, which resemble the epithelial lining of the intestine. They provide a cellular model of nutrient uptake in the gut. Experiments using this model will further the understanding of nutritional deficiencies, which cannot be accurately determined simply by measuring the quantities of nutrients in the diet. This research was carried out at the US Plant, Soil, and Nutrition Laboratory in Ithaca, New York.
