Description
Cellular membrane pump. Molecular model showing the protein structure of a membrane pump (pink), a structure that moves ions and chemicals across a cell membrane. A common example is a proton pump. Such pumps are key components of the metabolism and biochemistry of a cell. The structural elements shown here are the alpha helices and beta sheets, the secondary structure of the protein. Also shown is the lipid bilayer of the cell membrane, consisting of a dual layer of phospholipids. Each phospholipid consists of a hydrophilic phosphate group head (blue) and a hydrophobic fatty acid tail (white).
