Description
Cave painting. Cave painting showing Kudu (ante- lope). Kudu (Tragelaphus Sp.) are herbivorus ungu- lates (horned ruminants) with spiral horns. Their habitat ranges from forest to open steppes. The earliest cave paintings are Palaeolithic (stone- age) & are about 40,000 years old. Stoneage art- ists only had 4 colours to work from, red, yellow, brown & black. They fixed colour to the walls with water. Colour was applied with fingers or brushes. Animals depicted include the horse, bison, deer, mammoth & ibex. It is not known whether these pai- ntings are a record, ceremonial rite, or a method of ensuring luck in the next days hunt. Photograp- hed in in Dombashwa cave, Chinamora, Zimbabwe.
