Cholera prevention. German caricature of a man protecting himself from cholera. The subject is wearing a mask, a hat with a steaming infusion perched on top, a scarf, cloak, foot and leg protectors, and various items strapped to his torso. He is carrying aromatic herbs and pulling a cart with his possessions in it, no doubt as he flees from a cholera-infected area. Cholera is a disease caused by a bacterium which colonises the small intestine. It causes vomiting & diarrhoea and often fatal dehydration. It was rife in many areas of Europe until this century, due to poor sewage disposal & contaminated water supplies.
