Artist's Description

Photography caricature. Engraved caricature of the results of daguerreotype photography. The upper image is of a family group as drawn by a friend. The lower image is the same group as portrayed by a daguerreotype; the image is blurred and dark. Daguerreotype photography was invented by the French painter Louis Daguerre in 1837 and was the first form of photography to be widely used. Daguerre's process involved exposing a silver plate coated with silver iodide, developing it using mercury vapour and fixing the image with a hot salt solution. Despite the often disappointing results, the invention caused a public sensation. Taken from Punch, a British magazine, in 1855.
