It has been used as a recreational drug and medicinal plant for thousands of years. It has been shown to be effective in the treatment of chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting and chronic pain. It is also used to stimulate hunger in chemotherapy and AIDS patients and to relieve spasticity in multiple sclerosis patients.
