Artist's Description
Cancer research and treatment, conceptual image. The book cover shows a cancer cell and a blood vessel. Cancer cells divide in an uncontrolled fashion and migrate to invade other tissues. Treatment is with surgery if the cancer is still localised, and chemotherapy and radiotherapy if it has spread. Cancer cells usually arise from a mutation. Their characteristic mobility enables them to spread rapidly round the body, and invade other organs and tissues (metastasis). The cells may clump to form a structure called a tumour, which can be benign or malignant. One of the reasons cancerous (malignant) tumours can grow quickly is because they trigger the formation of new blood vessels to bring blood to the tumour.
