Description
The Canary Islands seen from space. All seven main islands of the Canary chain can be seen in this view looking east. At front left is La Palma, with the smaller Hierro to the right. Just below centre is the round island of Gomera, with Tenerife at centre frame. Just above centre is Gran Canaria. In the break in the clouds just below the African coast are the islands of Lanzarote (left) and Fuerteventura. The effect of the islands on the local sea and air currents is shown clearly in this image, with dark sea eddies and clouds in the leeward air stream. This photograph was taken from Shuttle Columbia during Mission STS-50 of 25 June to 9 July 1992.
