The following year he founded the observatory of Juvisy-sur-Orge and, in 1887, the French Astronomical Society (Societe Astronomique de France). Flammarion wrote many books, the best known of which is L'Astronomie Populaire (1879). Craters on the Moon and Mars are named in his honour.
