Description
Butterfly Nebula. Optical image of the Butterfly Nebula, also known as NGC 6302. This is a bipolar planetary nebula formed from hydrogen gas thrown off by a star near the end of its life. The Butterfly is 2200 light years from Earth in the constellation Saggitarius. This image was made using the 8.2-metre Very Large Telescope 'Antu' at the Cerro Paranal Observatory, Chile.
