Artist's Description

Bubble chamber photo of the production & decay of a lambda & a neutral kaon. Negative pions enter at bottom & stream up the picture. One collides with a proton in the bubble chamber liquid & appears to stop short; in fact it produces the lambda & kaon. Being neutral, these particles leave no tracks, but reveal themselves when they decay. The lambda decays to a negative pion & a proton, the neutral kaon to a positive & a negative pion. The lambda & kaon are both strange particles, containing a strange quark. As the example shows, strange particles are always produced in pairs - a phenomenon known as associated production"."
