Artist's Description
Breast fat necrosis, light micrograph. Fat necrosis (tissue death) is a benign breast condition often presenting as a lump that women discover themselves. It consists of necrosed fatty tissue accompanied by chronic inflammatory infiltrates. It can appear after any type of breast surgery, radiation or other injury. Fat necrosis does not lead to the development of breast cancer, but it may sometimes cause breast pain.
