Brain tumour surgery probe. X-ray of a rigid silicon, beta-sensitive semiconductor detector probe that has been placed in the head of a patient with a malignant glioma (brain tumour). Gliomas arise from the glial cells of the brain or spinal cord. This type of probe is used to detect cancerous tissues labelled with beta-emitting radiopharmaceuticals (radioisotopes). These emit beta radiation and accumulate in the cancer. The probe allows surgeons operating on the patient's brain to remove all the cancerous tissue. This X-ray was taken circa 1970.
